FAQ

What are my specialties and qualifications?

I’m a Registered Psychotherapist with training in Gestalt therapy. My approach is grounded in presence, humour, and authentic connection. Alongside my professional training, my own personal journey with therapy has given me a deep respect for how challenging—and transformative—the process can be. This combination of my training, ongoing professional development and lived experience allows me to support clients with warmth, compassion, and practical tools for change.

What can I expect from our first session?

In our first session, we’ll spend time getting to know each other. I’ll invite you to share what’s bringing you to therapy right now, and we’ll talk about what you’d like to get out of our work together. There’s no pressure to have everything figured out—it’s really just a chance to start building a connection and see if we’re a good fit.

What are your fees, payment policies, and insurance details?

Fees & Payment
My fee is $155 per session. Payment is due on the day of your appointment via e-transfer to jcole@gestaltmail.ca. I do keep a few sliding scale spots available in my virtual practice – feel free to ask.

Insurance Coverage
Most insurance companies provide coverage for sessions with a Registered Psychotherapist (RP), though policies vary. I recommend checking with your provider in advance to confirm your coverage.

What is your approach to therapy, and what types of therapy do you offer?

I offer authentic, collaborative, and compassionate therapy that blends professional expertise with lived experience. My Gestalt-informed training focuses on helping people become more aware of their thoughts, feelings, and behaviours in the present moment so they can better understand themselves. I meet clients where they are—whether you come with a lot to unpack or just curiosity—without judgment or expectation. This combination of warmth, authenticity, and practical guidance allows clients to make meaningful, sustainable progress at their own pace.

How long does each therapy session last and what is the typical duration of therapy?

Session Length & Duration of Therapy
Each session is 50 minutes.

Therapy looks different for everyone—the length of our work together depends on your needs and where you are in your journey. If you’re going through something big or heavy, we may meet more frequently at first and then gradually shift to a pace that fits your needs.

How do I know if therapy is working?

Therapy is working when you notice even small changes in how you think, feel, or respond to life’s challenges or in communicating with others. This might look like: feeling more understood, handling stress more easily, noticing patterns in your behaviour, or having new ways to cope. Progress isn’t always linear—sometimes it’s subtle and over time, you should feel a growing sense of insight, relief, or empowerment.

I also encourage checking in regularly about how you feel therapy is going so we can adjust the approach to fit your needs.
